Stepping Stone for an Academic Career
The Tinbergen Institute
The research master programme is run by the Tinbergen Institute, a school for research and graduate education run jointly by the schools of economics of the VU University Amsterdam, Erasmus University Rotterdam (EUR) and University of Amsterdam (UvA). The Institute was named after Jan Tinbergen, the Dutch Nobel Prize laureate in Economics (1969).
This two-year Research Master's program is an excellent stepping stone for PhD research and training. Most students who successfully complete the TI's Master of Philosophy in Economics obtain a PhD position at the Faculty of Economics and Business of the VU University or at one of the other participating faculties. The MPhil in Economics prepares students to pursue a PhD. For those students aiming at careers in consultancy or policy advice, the MPhil also offers an excellent foundation.
After your PhD, the world is your proverbial oyster. Students may land a top job in academics, in government, or at an international organization. Over 550 TI PhD alumni have taken up positions at universities all over the world and work in leading positions at:
The Netherlands Bureau for Economic Policy Analysis
The Dutch Central Bank
The World Bank
The European Commission
International Monetary Fund
Larger consultancy firms
